Top Tips

For some people creative activity is completely freeing, for others it can be a little daunting. We've put together these top tips to give you a head start.

01

Plan/sketch

Some people like to take a few minutes to plan out their design before getting started. Sketching it out on paper first is a great way to visualise your design. You can also draw your design directly onto your pottery with a pencil, which will disappear once fired in the kiln.

02

Name it!

Pop your name and date on the bottom of your pottery in pencil, so we can keep track of each item.

03

Give it some layers

We use underglaze paints on our pottery which appear pale when first painted on. The colours will appear brighter once they have been glazed and fired.

If you would like the colours you paint with to be bright and vibrant we advise using at least 2-3 coats of paint. The paint dries quickly, but for best results ensure your first coat is dry before applying a second coat.

04

Keep a bare bottom

Please do not paint the base of your pottery piece as this area sits on the kiln shelves and if paint is left on the bottom of the piece, it will stick to the kiln shelf.  Please leave the base paint free.

05

Mistake...what mistake?!

If you make a mistake you can usually remove the paint by using a damp sponge. Please bear in mind that dark colours can stain the pottery and are difficult to remove completely.

06

Enjoy!
